Donna R. Newman, Esq has close to 30 years of experience as a criminal defense attorney. She has specialized on representing criminal defendants in federal district court and the federal courts of appeals. She has represented hundreds of clients in matters ranging from simple frauds to complex security fraud, money laundering, misappropriation of government funds, and racketeering cases.  Her extensive appellate practice involves direct appeals, as well as, all petitions for habeas corpus relief. She has an AV Martindale & Hubbell Peer Review Rating.

 

 

Ms. Newman is widely respected by federal judges and prosecutors. Ms. Newman received national attention as a result of her representation of Jose Padilla, the accused "dirty bomber" held in U.S. military custody as an "enemy combatant."

She was a featured commentator in the released documentary "Unconstitutional: The War on Our Civil Liberties," and has appeared in numerous documentaries shown on PBS and the BBC. She has appeared as a guest commentator on national television speaking on constitutional rights and the impact of 9/11 on civil liberties:

Ms. Newman was featured in the February 11, 2003 “Public Lives” section of The New York Times, the New York Law Journal Magazine “Top Cases of 2002,” and the September 11, 2002 edition of Time Magazine. Her work has been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles including: The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald Tribune, New York Times Magazine and the Village Voice.

Ms. Newman has spoken on numerous panels throughout the United States concerning constitutional rights and presidential powers, including panels at the University of Montana, CUNY Law School 2007 symposium, Center of Law and Security at New York University. She has organized and participated in Continuing Education Seminars concerning topics relative to the practice of criminal law in federal court. For several years she volunteered as a guest faculty member at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. She is the author of “The Jose Padilla Story,” New York Law School Law Review, Vol. 48, Number 1 &2, 2003/04.

Ms. Newman received her Bachelor of Science degree from Long Island University in 1968 and graduated cum laude and with Departmental High Honors. In 1972 she received her Master of Science Degree from Brooklyn College of the State University of New York. Ms. Newman attained her Juris Doctorate degree from New York Law School in 1986 and graduated cum laude. She was also the receipt of the prestigious Federal Litigation Award. At New York Law School she was on the Human Rights Journal where she edited articles for publication and wrote a note.

Ms. Newman has received a number of awards and considerable recognition for her ardent defense of the accused.
